How to select perfect trigger sprayer for your liquid product
We noticed that some clients come to us for trigger sprayers but can’t describe their needs clearly. We never mean to blame them, there are countless trigger spray pumps and manufacturers out there and it certainly can be a bit confusing to choose the right dispensing tool for an unique liquid product, especially for whom have little to know about trigger sprayers.
This article put together all essential tips to help you narrow down alternatives before you make final decision on trigger sprayers.
1. Start from chemical
The first consideration is that whether your liquid chemical is compatible with trigger sprayers. Typical trigger sprayers are made of plastic including polyethylene(PE), polypropylene(PP), polyformaldehyde(POM), LDPE, HDPE. These plastic formed with fortified grain usually have good compatibility with various chemicals. However, Part of trigger sprayers contains rubber seal(NBR) in piston and nozzle structure, which might be damaged by certain polar solvent, and some aggressive chemicals can cause corrosion on metal springs. In case your chemical is aggressive, make sure ask manufacturer for material list of trigger sprayer or arrange a sample testing. (link: guideline to test sample of trigger sprayers)
Also, if you got products in high viscosity and like to spray it as a “gel” form, a special designed trigger sprayer will be desired.
2. Packaging & Transportation
Think about how you will fill products into container, and in what way consumer will get the final product, is it a ready-to-use bottle type, or sprayer is attached to outside of separately capped bottle? There are “shipper” and “non-shipper” styles trigger sprayers while “shipper” trigger sprayer is designed specifically to be in the “off” possible, in order to prevent leakage during transit. For increased safety, some trigger sprayers have lock latch, CR(children resistant) nozzle and ratchet neck finish design to prevent misuse and leakage. Base on what your chemical is and transportation product will go through, consider if you need these extra features or not.
3. What is the ideal volume for the sprayer to output.
How much liquid should come out for one squeeze? It depends on the product type, while the work area is large in commercial & industrial application, high output can be more efficient. In the other hand, if fine mist is desired for hair-salon, air-freshen products, low output can help more to achieve. Our company offers various trigger sprayer types with output from 0.3ml per squeeze all the way up to 4ml.
4. Spray patterns
Actually the selection on spray pattern is not as easy as imagined. For mist pattern, do you want a large angle mist or only want to cover a narrow range? For stream pattern, do you want a straight stream or circular stream? And for foam pattern some customers would prefer rich, dry foam which can cling to surface, while the other think watery foam can better fit their need. There are abundant nozzle options to meet tailored needs, make sure you express requirement to supplier and they would choose the most suitable one.
5. Neck finish
Correct neck finish will ensure trigger sprayer perfectly fit on paired bottles, the basic principle is use the same standard. For example, 28/400 bottle neck should pair with 28/400 trigger sprayer.
However, there is a funny phenomenon. Take 28/400 for example, We know 28 refers to the outer diameter of bottle neck which is 28mm, and 400 refers to the thread type. Many U.S. packaging manufacturers declare that 28/400 should have one full circle thread corresponding to bottle/closure finish standard issued by Glass Packaging Institute (GPI), but for some unknown reason, many China manufacturers regard one and half circle thread as 28/400, which should be 28/410 according to standard.
I don’t know what the reason is and this certainly cause many unpleasant misunderstanding and problems, we have to send new samples to customers sometimes. So we encourage if possible, send technical drawing of target bottle to your trigger sprayers supplier to avoid this happen. And leaking test is essential for sample test.
6. Dip tube
There are rigid and flexible dip tube for trigger sprayers. Rigid dip tube usually is in big diameter and for higher output trigger sprayers. While dip tube comes rigid, to get the correct number dip tube length, you need to measure from top of bottle neck to bottom. if the container you are using features a “push up” at the bottom, meaning the bottom is raised. If there is a push up, subtract about 3/32” from the container length you previously measured to compensate. This step ensures proper flow through the dip tube.
Besides, if the dip tube comes flexible, it should slightly bend toward the wall of your container to maximize product dispensing. You need to add about one inch to the height of the bottle. This will give enough length to properly bend inside the container without inhibiting dispensing.
If you are an ethical brand and insist on reduce carbon footprint. All plastic trigger sprayers would be your prior. Without metal spring, all plastic trigger sprayer can be more chemical resistant and fully recyclable. Hangzhou Moonlight cleaning products co,.ltd offers all plastic trigger sprayer with PCR (post consumer resin) material. PCR material reduces the amount of plastic waste going into ocean and landfill, also by reduce using original resin, lowering manufacturers’ energy and carbon footprint.
